John Rawls was the most important American political philosopher of the twentieth century, yet his post-war defense of American values is still contested. His Theory of Justice (1971) and Political Liberalism (1993) attempt to counter the various "manifestos" of totalitarian ideologies in vogue during the Vietnam and post-war eras while at the same time defending our exceptional union of personal freedom and moral equality under one coherent conception of distributive justice. We'll explore whether this, our shared civic center, can withstand contemporary challenges from the left and the right.
