Pensacola was an island of cosmopolitan living, from the time of the revolution until 1840. Spanish, French, English, Native Americans, many free Africans—all lived in harmony. As Florida became a slave state in 1845 things changed radically. Laws were passed statewide. Pensacola refused to go along. This is the story of the forces that were brought to bear on Pensacola, and made it change.
